I always thought Barbie is a boring bitch. She is the epitome of everything superficial and represents society’s unrealistic expectation of beauty. Of course i used to own Barbie(s) when i was little, but (probably just like everybody else) i ended up giving her pixie haircuts or craggy bobs, paint her lips in other shades than pink and mess her face with cheap markers just to make her a tad bit more interesting. And (in a Freudian manner) to give her some FLAWS.
Growing up, I was a teenager with normal problems such as blemish, fat tummy, short limbs, etc and when i looked at my Barbies, it reminded me that i was everything the opposite of her. The opposite of beautiful. The opposite of perfect.
And just like every other socially conscious woman, i blamed Barbie for having low self-esteem in my adolescent period. I blamed Barbie and her Stepford image, her perfect life, for intimidating every insecure, low-self esteemed girl out there who hates her and the existence of fake bimbos who looks up to her.
Well, not anymore.
Not since i saw satirically funny and fascinating images of Barbie, getting it on with Ken in a kinky, S&M manner.
Kudos to Nancy Farmer !
Don’t get me wrong tho, Barbie is still a bitch.
But bitch is definitely my kind.
